Since his early 1990s debut, DJ Quik has established himself as a strong rapper/producer, extending his career mainly as a funk-inspired beatmaker for stars and protégés alike. Quik, whose real name is David Marvin Blake, rose to prominence in his hometown of Compton, California, by producing mixtapes that included AMG, 2nd II None, and Hi-C. He was signed to Profile Records based on these recordings and made his debut with Quik Is the Name (1991), on which he produced all of the songs and seldom shared the mic, making him an unique solo rap artist to do so.
