Mewes returned to the character of Jay in “Mallrats” the following year, and in 1996, he featured in the film “Drawing Flies.” He worked with Smith again in 1997’s “Chasing Amy” and 1999’s “Dogma,” then in 1999’s “The Blair Clown Project,” “Spilt Milk,” and “Vulgar,” as well as a cameo as Jay in “Scream 3.” (2000). Personal Experiences

On January 30, 2009, Jason married Jordan Monsanto, and on April 1, 2015, they had their daughter Logan Lee. Mewes has battled with drug addiction, and after shooting “Mallrats,” he began using heroin. Kevin Smith welcomed Jason into his flat and told Mewes that he was “going cold turkey on the brown.” When the pair started rehearsals for “Dogma,” Smith had taken Mewes to methadone clinics, and Jason had been clean for approximately seven months. Mewes fell asleep in the midst of a scene after resuming heroin use a few weeks into the “Dogma” production. In 1999, he was arrested and sentenced to drug treatment and community service for possessing heroin.

Smith allowed Mewes come back in with him when he married and purchased a home, but he threw him out when he found that he was taking narcotics again. Jason stole Kevin’s ATM card and paid over $1,000 to have heroin delivered to a hotel where a press junket for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” was being held. Smith ordered Mewes to go to rehab, but none of his stints were effective, prompting Kevin to pass on casting Jason in “Jersey Girl.”

While on heroin in late 2002, Mewes fell asleep beside a lighted candle and awoke to find a fire had begun. He turned himself in to New Jersey police in April 2003 for breaching his probation, and a court sentenced him to six months in treatment. Jason said that he was clean and had no desire to take drugs in July 2006, but he relapsed in 2009 after having surgery. Jason stated that he has been clean since July 2010 in a 2014 Reddit Q&A. Smith created the “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old” podcast in August 2010 to assist Mewes remain sober.
