The facs is a singer and songwriter from the United States. He has released three albums, two of which have been certified gold.
Facs was created from the ashes of the like-minded Chicago band Disappears, and they play dark, forceful music that sits between between post-punk and post-rock. On their 2018 debut, Negative Houses, they reduced their music down to its most basic rhythmic roots, then added more experimentation and melody on Void Moments in 2020 and Present Tense the following year.
Disappears bassist Damon Carruesco departed the band in late 2016 to focus on his visual work and his electronic project Tüth. The surviving members of the band, guitarist/vocalist Brian Case, guitarist Jonathan Van Herik, and drummer Noah Leger, wanted to continue creating music together, so Case moved to bass and the group renamed themselves Facs. The band joined to Trouble in Mind after uploading recordings online and recorded their first album, Negative Houses, with John Congleton at Chicago’s Electrical Audio studio in June 2017.
Van Herik departed Facs shortly before the publication of Negative Houses in March 2018. Case returned to guitar, and the band enlisted the help of an old friend, erstwhile We Regazzi drummer Alianna Kalaba, to fill in on bass. Facs reconnected with Congleton for their second album, as well as working with Jeremy Lemos, the other half of Case’s electronic band Acteurs. Lifelike was released in March 2019 and focused on the interaction between Kalaba and Leger, as well as Case’s mercurial guitar soundscapes. On Void Moments, Trouble in Mind published in March 2020, the band’s melodic undercurrents came to the fore. Facs returned to the studio towards the end of the year, working with Electrical Audio engineer Sanford Parker and adopting a more spontaneous approach to the creative process. Present Tense, their fourth album, was released in May 2021, and it was appropriately unexpected.
