Jennifer, his mother, is of Scottish ancestry, while Alberto, his father, is of Italian/Egyptian lineage. Alberto used to go by the name Zacharia, but he later changed it to Ridgeley. Alberto worked for Canon and Jennifer taught at Bushey Heath Primary School. Paul, Andrew’s younger brother, is a drummer who has performed with Bananarama on stage. Ridgeley went to Bushey Meads School in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and was a classmate of George Michael. When George arrived at the school, Ridgeley took Michael under his wing, and the two played in various bands together, including The Executive, before becoming Wham! in 1981.

Ridgeley supplied backup vocals and played guitar for Wham! Michael was the lead vocalist, principal songwriter, and keyboard player. They signed a contract with Innervision Records after approaching numerous record labels with their 10-minute demo tape; they eventually switched to Epic Records/CBS. On July 9, 1983, Wham! released their debut studio album, “Fantastic,” which charted at #1 in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The tracks “Wham Rap!
