They had numerous #1 songs, and their work with classically trained pop/R&B vocalist Dionne Warwick from the 1960s through the 1980s is still popular today.

“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” and “That’s What Friends Are For” were among the popular songs he penned. Early Years and the Start of a Career

Burt Bacharach was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1928 and reared in the Queens suburb of Kew Gardens. Irma, his mother, was an artist and composer, and Mark, his father, was a syndicated newspaper columnist. Bacharach attended Forest Hills High School as a teenager. He began with classical piano instruction but soon became unsatisfied, so he moved on to jazz and bebop. Bacharach had his further education in music at McGill University in Montreal, as well as the Mannes School of Music in New York and the Music Academy of the West in Montecito, California.

Bacharach spent three years as a pianist and conductor for vocalist Vic Damone after returning from his term of service in the US Army. Polly Bergen, Steve Lawrence, Paula Stewart, and the Ames Brothers were among the vocalists with whom he later worked. Bacharach was suggested to Marlene Dietrich, a Hollywood actress in need of a conductor and arranger for her nightclub performances, in 1956. He traveled the globe with Dietrich until the early 1960s.

Beginning of a Songwriting Career

Bacharach met lyricist Hal David, who would become his future partner, in 1957. Soon after, they started writing songs together, including “The Story of My Life,” which was recorded by Marty Robbins and went to number one on the US Country Chart. “Magic Moments,” performed by Perry Como, and “Make it Easy on Yourself,” sung by Jerry Butler, were among the duo’s subsequent successes. Bacharach and David collaborated on approximately 100 songs in the early 1960s. Dionne Warwick, for whom they penned smash songs including “Don’t Make Me Over,” “Walk on By,” “Alfie,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” was one of their most successful collaborations.

“Hit Maker! Burt Bacharach Plays His Hits,” Bacharach’s debut solo album, was published in 1965. Despite being mostly ignored in the United States, it reached number three on the UK Albums Chart. Later, in 1969, Bacharach and David’s song “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which they composed for the Western film “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” became one of their most renowned successes. For their efforts, the duo received an Academy Award for Best Original Song. They were also nominated for Oscars in the 1960s for their songs “The Look of Love,” “What’s New Pussycat?” and “Alfie.”

Developing Your Songwriting Career

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Bacharach continued to compose and produce music, appearing often on television and in concert. The soundtrack for the 1973 musical version of “Lost Horizon,” which he co-wrote with David, was one of his most famous efforts. The film was a financial and critical failure, and it led to numerous legal battles between the two men, as well as with Warwick. Bacharach’s long-running collaboration with David came to an end with this production. Two years later, they returned for a short reunion to compose and produce Stephanie Mills’ album “For the First Time.” Bacharach later formed a new collaboration with lyricist and wife Carole Bayer Sager in the early 1980s. “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” “Heartlight,” and “On My Own” were among the popular songs written by the two. They also penned “That’s What Friends Are For” for Warwick. Bacharach went on to perform at concerts all around the globe, often collaborating with Warwick at sold-out performances.
