Leslie Jones was born Annette Jones in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 7, 1967. Jones went to a high school in Lynwood, California, and when her father recommended she play basketball due of her height, she won a basketball scholarship to Chapman University in Orange, California. Jones moved to Colorado State University in 1986 when her basketball coach, Brian Berger, accepted a coaching position there. She majored in computer science and accounting before deciding on communication as her major. Leslie departed Colorado State and returned to Los Angeles after winning the title of “Funniest Person on Campus.” She worked at UPS and Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles during the day and at night at comedy clubs.
