Leslie Jones was born Annette Jones in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 7, 1967. Leslie’s family traveled often due to her father’s service in the United States Army, and when they came to Los Angeles, he got employment as an electronics engineer at KJLH, which is owned by Stevie Wonder. Jones went to a high school in Lynwood, California, and when her father recommended she play basketball due of her height, she won a basketball scholarship to Chapman University in Orange, California. Leslie worked as a DJ at KNAB, the student radio station, while at Chapman. Jones moved to Colorado State University in 1986 when her basketball coach, Brian Berger, accepted a coaching position there. She majored in computer science and accounting before deciding on communication as her major. Leslie departed Colorado State and returned to Los Angeles after winning the title of “Funniest Person on Campus.” She worked at UPS and Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles during the day and at night at comedy clubs. Jones was encouraged to spend two years refining her comedic talents in New York City by comedians Dave Chappelle and Mother Love, and she earned an appearance on BET’s “ComicView” before returning to L.A. Leslie addressed the abuse on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” later that month, saying that “hate speech and freedom of expression are two separate things.” Jones was again attacked the following month when her website was hacked and pictures of her driver’s license and passport, as well as purported nude photos of Leslie and a video tribute to late Cincinnati Zoo gorilla Harambe, were uploaded (in reference to some of the racist Twitter remarks that were directed at Jones the previous month).
