Michael married Nichole Beattie, a writer/producer, on January 15, 2000, and the couple had two boys, Julian and Maceo, before divorcing in 2007. In 2016, Rapaport married actress Kebe Dunn. Michael was charged with aggravated harassment after being detained in 1997 for harassing his ex-girlfriend, actress Lili Taylor. Rapaport pled guilty to the charges, and a protective order was imposed against him, prohibiting him from contacting Taylor. He was also told he needed to go to therapy. During an American Airlines aircraft in June 2018, he prevented a guy from accessing an emergency door. Michael discussed the incident on the radio “”I got up out of my seat, half asleep, with my headphones in my ear, and I placed my hand on his shoulder, like ‘What the (explicit) are you doing?’” said Rapaport in “I Am Rapaport: Stereo Podcast.” He was holding the lever with both hands. I stated it aloud three times. He still had his hand on the (explicit) item the second time I stated it. I had him trapped against the seat in a way. All of this happens in approximately 45 seconds.” Other passengers and flight attendants finally came over to assist him in removing the guy from the door.

Michael had a brownstone on East 18th Street in New York City for many years. He leased three apartments in the three-story structure for as much as $8,000 per month. Rapaport had to remove actress Natasha Lyonne from one of the apartments in 2004 after she allegedly threatened a neighbor’s dog and destroyed the place. Michael seems to have sold the building for $4 million in 2009, according to real estate records.
