In addition, Bill is the founding editor of The Marshall Project, an independent, non-profit news organization that reports on crime and punishment in America. He also worked in the Times’ Moscow bureau from 1986 to 1991, where he was bureau chief during the final years of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Keller won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for his reporting.

Bill went to St. Paul’s Roman Catholic School. Matthews and Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, Calif. He graduated from Pomona College in 1970, where he began his journalism career as a reporter for the college newspaper, The Collegian. Later, in July 2000, Mr. Keller graduated from the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

From July 1970 to March 1979, Bill worked as a reporter in Portland for The Oregonian newspaper. He later worked for the Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report and the Dallas Times Herald.

Ms. Keller started at The New York Times in April 1984 as a correspondent in the Washington bureau. He then worked as a correspondent for The Times in Moscow from December 1986 to October 1991, the last three years as head of the newspaper’s bureau.

The Marshall Project is a nonprofit, nonpartisan online journalism organization that reports on criminal justice issues in the United States. The project is the original idea of former hedge fund manager, filmmaker and journalist Neil Barsky, who announced it in his byline in a freelance article in the New York Times in November 2013.
