Mane had been peddling narcotics for two years when he was stopped on his bicycle and robbed with a gun aimed at his head in 1995. He began carrying a weapon after that. Mane earned a 3.0 GPA and a scholarship at Georgia Perimeter College after graduating from high school in 1998. In 2001, he was dismissed from college after an undercover cop discovered him in possession of crack cocaine. He was given a 90-day jail sentence as well as probation.

After his first arrest, Mane began to take music seriously. He released an album called La Flare, distributed through a run of 1,000 CDs he distributed throughout East Atlanta. Mane did a collaboration with Young Jeezy called “So Icy,” which was distributed through Tommy Boy Records. In 2005, Mane released his independent debut album entitled Trap House. The album crept into the Top 20 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts and landed at the top spot on the Billboard Heatseekers Album chart. His second album Hard to Kill followed in 2006. It included the hit single “Freaky Gurl”, which peaked at number 12 on the Hot Rap Tracks. Mane released the studio album The State vs. Radric Davis in 2010.

Gucci Mane and Rae Sremmurd worked together on the single “Black Beatles.” It was released in November 2016 and reached the top spot on the chart of songs–not just R&B, hip hop, or rap songs — all songs. It was Mane’s first number-one single as a featured artist. It remained at the top of the charts for seven non-consecutive weeks in late 2016 and early 2017.

On October 17, 2017, Gucci Mane married Keyshia Ka’oir. The wedding was funded for by BET, who turned it into a 10-episode TV series dubbed “The Mane Event,” in which Ka’oir organizes the wedding and walks down the aisle on a diamond-studded carpet. After performing at an Atlanta Hawks basketball game, Mane proposed to Ka’oir.

He disclosed in his book that he had a son born in 2007 whom he was unaware of until 2016.

Mane was arrested for cocaine possession in 2001. He was given a 90-day prison sentence.

He was assaulted by a group of men at a house in Decatur, Georgia, in May 2005. Mane and his friends opened fire on the group, killing one of them. That man’s body was eventually discovered behind a middle school. He confessed to the murder and was charged with it. He said he fired the rounds in self-defense. In January 2006, the murder case against him was dismissed. Mane had pleaded no contest to an aggravated assault charge against a nightclub owner the previous summer in October. Mane was serving a six-month sentence for assault when the murder accusation was withdrawn. In late January 2006, he was freed from prison. Mane was sentenced to a year in prison after failing to complete his community service hours following his 2005 assault conviction. In May of 2010, he was released.

Since 2010, Mane has been arrested and detained several times. He was most recently freed from prison in 2016, as of early 2020.

Gucci Mane sued his former manager Debra Antney and her son, fellow rapper Waka Flocka Flame, in November 2013. Gucci alleges Debra and Waka defrauded him blind when he was their client in the lawsuit. Debra Gucci is accused of stealing jewelry and mismanaging Gucci’s royalties and assets, according to Gucci. Gucci informed the court that he was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time, and that he still had some significant IRS concerns to deal with.
