In 1968, Dalton made his film debut in the historical drama Lion in Winter, playing the role of Philip II, with Katharine Hepburn, Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins. Several other films followed, including the film adaptation of Wuthering Heights, in which he played Heathcliff; Cromwell, a biographical film about Oliver Cromwell, in which he played Prince Rupert of Wales; and Mary, Queen of Scots, in which he played Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley. He then starred in the spy thriller Permission to Kill, the musical Sextet, the Spanish biopic The Man Who Knew Love and the thriller Agatha. In 2014, Dalton landed the lead role in the horror drama series Penny Dreadful, where he played investigator Malcolm Murray. Another big role came in 2019, when Dalton went on to play Dr. Niles Calder in the DC Comics superhero series Doom Patrol.
