In 1968, Dalton made his film debut in the historical drama Lion in Winter, playing the role of Philip II, with Katharine Hepburn, Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins. Several other films followed, including the film adaptation of Wuthering Heights, in which he played Heathcliff; Cromwell, a biographical film about Oliver Cromwell, in which he played Prince Rupert of Wales; and Mary, Queen of Scots, in which he played Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley. He then starred in the spy thriller Permission to Kill, the musical Sextet, the Spanish biopic The Man Who Knew Love and the thriller Agatha. Dalton began the 1980s with roles in the comic book film Flash Gordon and the historical drama Chanel Solitaire.

James Bond

After starring in the gothic horror film Doctor and the Demons, Dalton made his debut in 1987 as secret agent James Bond in Living Daylights, the 15th film in the series. Bond movie. From 2009 to 2010, the actor was both the narrator and the character of Rassilon in the science fiction series Doctor Who. He also appeared in six episodes of the NBC spy comedy Chuck. In 2014, Dalton landed the lead role in the horror drama series Penny Dreadful, where he played investigator Malcolm Murray. Another big role came in 2019, when Dalton went on to play Dr. Niles Calder in the DC Comics superhero series Doom Patrol.

On stage, Dalton has participated in numerous productions in a wide variety of venues. In the 1970s he played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and also played Henry, Prince of Wales in Henry IV at the Round House Theatre in Maryland. His other works of the decade include the films Whirlwind, Black Comedy, White Lies and Romance. In the 1980s, Dalton was seen in Antony and Cleopatra, The Taming of the Shrew and The Poet’s Touch, and as Harry Percy in Henry IV at the Barbican Centre in London. His later filmography includes Love Letters, Peter and the Wolf and His Dark Materials.

Personal life

From 1971 to 1986, Dalton dated actress Vanessa Redgrave. He then briefly dated actresses Stephanie Powers and Whoopi Goldberg. In the 90s he had a relationship with the musician Oksana Grigorieva; together they have a son, Alexander. The couple divorced in 2003.
