Career: In 1989, Barlow appointed showbiz agent Barry Woolley as his manager and recorded the single Love Is in the Air, which was never released. Barlow contacted casting agent Nigel Martin-Smith, who was interested in forming a boy band. Martin-Smith chose Barlow to sing in the band after being impressed by his self-written songs, including an early demo of his own A Million Love Song.

Barlow wrote most of the band’s songs and is now known as the lead singer of the boy band Take That. After choosing Barlow as the band’s lead singer, Martin-Smith recruited Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and finally Robbie Williams to join the band. The band signs with RCA Records and gets its first number one with Pray. Other hits include A Million Love Songs, It Only Takes a Minute and Could It Be Magic. Take That’s first album, Take That & Party, was released in August 1992. It quickly reached number two in the UK album charts.

Their second album, Everything Changes, is based almost entirely on Barlow’s own compositions. It went straight to number one in the UK and spawned four number one singles. Barlow won the 1994 Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song for his number one hit Pray. Later that year, Barlow provided backing vocals for Elton John’s song Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King. The third album Take That Nobody Else, also based on Barlow’s compositions, went straight to number one and spawned three number one singles, including Barlow’s song Back for Good, which is probably the best known today. A greatest hits compilation followed, which again reached number one. The single from the album How Deep Is Your Love was their last single before the band reformed in 2005. The thirteenth. After the breakup of Take That, Barlow started a solo career, which proved to be very successful. Her first two singles Forever Love and Love Won’t Wait reached number one in the UK. His debut album, Open Road, reached number one in the UK album chart and has sold 2 million copies worldwide. Barlow’s first single released in the United States as a solo artist was So Help Me Girl, which reached number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and number one on the Billboard Contemporary chart. He broke into the top ten again in the UK with his single Open Road, which reached number seven. Barlow released his second LP Twelve Months, Eleven Days in 1999. He received little publicity and finished in a disappointing 35th place. Barlow retired from his singing career in late 1999. From 2000 to 2004 he was a producer for many other artists. In 2005 he resumed his singing career after a six-year hiatus. Barlow has sold millions of records as a solo artist.

Take That made a comeback in 2005, when they were thrust into the spotlight after a successful TV documentary: Take That: For the record. New success and renewed interest led to a renaissance of Take That’s career in 2005, when the band, reformed after Robbie Williams, reunited to tour arenas and stadiums. Their comeback single, Patience, spent four weeks at the top of the UK charts and also topped the charts in Europe. Patience won the Brit Award for single of the year. The next single, Shine, was the band’s tenth number one single. Take That have released their first new album in over a decade, Beautiful World. The album reached number one on the UK album chart and the band was nominated for four Brit Awards in 2008 (Best UK Band, Best UK Album, Best UK Single and Best UK Live Performance). They won the awards for Best British Single and Best British Live Performance. They released their second album after the reunion, The Circus, which immediately landed in the UK album charts and went multi-platinum just four days after its release.

Since then, the band has released three more successful albums: Progress in 2010, III in 2014 and Wonderland in 2017. Barlow has also released three other solo studio albums: Sing in 2012, Since I Saw You Last in 2013 and Music Played by Humans in 2020.

In addition to his work with the band and his solo work, Barlow has written for Take That member Robbie Williams, Elton John, Lily Allen and many others. Even the Queen of England asked Gary to write a song with Andrew Lloyd Webber for her Diamond Jubilee. He was appointed head judge of The X Factor UK for seasons eight, nine and ten. To date, Gary has been nominated for dozens of music industry awards. He won five Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting.

Private life: Barlow married Dawn Andrews in 2000. Dawn was a dancer on the Take That Nobody Else Tour in 1995. They have three children:  Daniel (born 2000), Emily (born 2002) and Daisy (born 2009). In 2012, the couple learned that their daughter Poppy had been stillborn. Despite losing his daughter the week before, he performed at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, where he sang the hit Rule the World.
