Paul “Bear” Begala (born March 24, 1946) is a political consultant and author, who was a senior advisor to President Bill Clinton from 1994 through 1997. He has been a commentator on political issues for CNN from 1997 to 2008, and from 2010 to present. Begala also worked as a political consultant for the Democratic Leadership Council from 1997 to 1999. Begala was a CNN commentator from 1997 to 2008, and from 2010 to present. He was a senior advisor to the Bill Clinton Presidential Campaign from 1992 to 1994.

I just finished reading a great biography on Paul Begala. I have been trying to learn more about the man behind the myth that is George Will. Paul Begala is a Washington insider who has been a political operative for several Presidential campaigns and served as a spokesman for President Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal.

He works as a research professor at Georgetown University, where he also does public policy research. Begala also played a key role in the 1992 presidential race, assisting Clinton in winning the election. In addition, he has written five political works.

Paul, along with his business partner James Carville, assisted then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton in winning the presidential election in 1992. He was then the Clinton-Gore campaign’s top strategist in 1992. Clinton won 33 states in his campaign and became the first Democrat to be elected President since 1976. Paul subsequently worked in the Clinton White House as a counselor to the president, managing policy, politics, and communications.

Other well-organized political victories for Paul and Carville include Harris Wofford’s 1991 Pennsylvania United States Senate victory, incumbent New Jersey United States Senator Frank Lautenberg’s 1988 re-election campaign, and the gubernatorial victories of Robert Casey in Pennsylvania in 1986, Wallace G. Wilkinson in Kentucky in 1987, and Zell Miller in Georgia in 1990.

Begala has also served as a co-host on CNN’s political discussion show Crossfire. He was a close advisor to Clinton throughout his time as a counselor to the president in the Clinton administration. As the administration’s main public spokesperson, he assisted in formulating and supporting the administration’s objectives.
