Early Years and the Start of a Career

Talib Kweli was born in 1975 in New York City, New York, and grew up in Brooklyn’s Park Slope area. His mother is an English professor, while his father is an Adelphi University administrator. He received his further education at New York University, where he studied experimental theater.

Kweli made his music debut on Mood’s album “Doom” in 1997, performing on a couple songs as a guest. He has collaborated on underground records under the moniker Reflection Eternal alongside rapper and producer Hi-Tek. “Fortified Live” and “B-Boy Document 99/Chaos” were two of the duo’s early songs.

Efforts in collaboration with Mos Def

Kweli created the hip hop group Black Star with fellow Brooklyn rapper Mos Def. “Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star,” their only album, was released in 1998 to great acclaim. Kweli released the LP “Train of Thought” with Hi-Tek and the EP “Hip Hop for Respect” with Mos Def two years later. The latter was born out of outrage at recent police violence, particularly in the instance of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed man who was shot 41 times by police while grabbing for his wallet. Common, Kool G. Rap, Sporty Thievz, Posdnuos, Tiye Phoenix, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and Punchline were among the 41 musicians that contributed to the EP, which featured contributions from Common, Kool G. Rap, Sporty Thievz, Posdnuos, Tiye Phoenix, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and Punchline, among others.

Following that, Kweli collaborated with musicians Jorge Ben, Bilal, and Dead Prez on the 2002 album “Red Hot + Riot.”

In 2002, Kweli released his first solo album, “Quality.” It debuted at number 21 on the Billboard 200 and number six on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, with the Kanye West-produced song “Get By” as its first single. Kweli then released “The Beautiful Struggle,” which debuted at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2005, he released “Right About Now: The Official Sucka Free Mix CD,” a mixtape.
